Author Interview with D.D. Larsen
Alright y'all, I met this lovely when she included me into her reviewers on Instagram for her novel Perfect., and I was super grateful for that as well as her agreeing to do this interview. I have started reading her book, and hope to have the review up soon. She is super sweet, and loves her dogs as well as her writing! So let's dive in shall we?
Q: What is your name and where do you live?
A: D. D. Larsen, I live in Boulder, Colorado USA
Q: Are you an Indie Author or do you work with a publishing company?
A: Indie Author! Even though I only recently learned what that is, first time author.
Q: If you do work with a publishing company, which one and for how long?
A: Nope
Q: What genre(s) do you write?
A: My first book Perfect. is a Romance/Crime suspense and I am currently working on the second book in this series. Always think my books with have some type of romance in them but I also like to make them exciting as well.
Q: What made you want to become a writer in the first place?
A: I have always been and lover of books. Growing up you could always find me with a book in my backpack. I never go on a long car ride or flight without one. To this day my purse typically is always holding my current read, you never know when you will get a chance to read! Thought I would try my hand at writing and found out I really enjoy it!
Q: Do you work a regular job in between books?
A: Yup, I currently work full time as a Chemical Engineer. Writing normally happens on the weekends or at night if I’m not busy.
Q: How many books have you published?
A: This will be my first! Plan on there being many many more.
Q: How many books do you have in the works right now?
A: Currently two, the one I am just published and the second one in the serious. I get so involved in my story I don’t think I could write two books at the same time.
Q: What was your hardest scene to write so far?
A: I come up with ideas that I want to write into the book but obviously you have to set the scene and do the build up. This is always the hard part for me because I am anxious to write the idea I had but have to make sure I work it in.
Q: How many books do you have that are not being currently worked on, but are half-written or complete but unpublished?
A: One, the second in the Perfect Series. Haven’t revealed the title yet.
Q: Do you have a series developing?
A: Yup, not sure how many books it will be. Originally thought of doing a trilogy but it is looking like it may be four.
Q: Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
A: I have some ideas of how to do other books connected to the current one but I’ll have to see if there is a demand for it. Have so many other ideas I want to try!
Q: What is your next book that is set to be published and when is the release day?
A: Perfect. went live on May 27th! Hoping to get the second one out in the fall, thinking November.
Q: How long did it take you to write it?
A: First book took me almost two years. There were times when I would write a lot and then it would get shelfed for a few months before getting brought back out.
Q: What did you do when your characters stop talking (writer’s block) to you during the process?
A: Take a break, normally take my dogs out for a walk or workout. Then just try to get started again. I always tell myself it doesn’t need to be perfect, just get the ideas down and come back later to fix them.
Q: What routine do you have when you sit down to write a book?
A: I always have something to drink, coffee, tea, soda water, etc, at least one. Other than that I just find a place that feels right and start writing. Sometimes it is the couch, or bed, even the floor happens occasionally. Desks and tables come in as well, just depend on the day. I wish I could write outside more but its so hard to see the screen and my computer always over heats from the sun.
Q: Do you write it all out in long sittings or short ones (sprints)?
A: I normally make it about 45 minutes to an hour then need a short break or new writing spot. If it getting really good sometimes I lose track of time and it will be hours before I resurface.
Q: Do you get exhausted or energized during writing sessions?
A: Depends on what I am writing. If I am super excited and into it then I am energized. If I’m just grinding out details I normally need more coffee.
Q: Where do you get your ideas for your books?
A: My head. There is always so much going on in there. Before I even started writing I would always come up with book plots randomly. Just kind of write what feels right. I try to plan occasionally but I normally veer off path and write something else.
Q: Is there another author you look up to or strive to be as successful as?
A: I’m a huge 50 Shades of Grey Fan among others. It would be amazing if this became what I would do for a living but for now I just love writing and if my story connects with one person it will be worth it.
Q: Are you a reader yourself?
A: Yes! I don’t count but I am probably on my 30 plus book this year. I have 4 book shelfs full!
Q: If so, are you a beta or ARC reader for anyone else? (You don’t have to name for who if you do not wish to.)
A: No, actually just learned this was a thing. Might look into it.
Q: Do you like to read the same genre(s) you write?
A: I definitely love romance books but I am also a huge fantasy fan. Growing up I probably read every vampire and werewolf book that was available. Sometimes I get books because I know the author name or it shows up in my recommended but mostly off of the cover. If I like the cover I’ll read the book without even reading the back. Normally I don’t read the back, want to be surprised when I dive into the book.
Q: Do you have a favorite book or a book that stands out the most?
A: Die hard Twilight Fan but not sure I would say it is my favorite. I think all books affect me in a different way and I don’t have one that I reread constantly.
Q: Have you ever cried, laughed, or had a real emotional response to a book?
A: Basically every book I read. I get very into most books I read. My boyfriend will always catch me laughing at something, I try to explain but he never seems to get it out of context.
Q: What kind of social media do you have?
A: Instagram(@d.d.larsen), Facebook(D.D.LarsenAuthor) and Goodreads page
Q: Do you like to connect with your readers using your chosen platforms?
A: Yes! I would love to hear what people think of my book. Or just bond over our love of reading. Recently found the Bookstagram community on Instagram and I love how much everyone is into discussing books. It brings the characters to life.
Q: Do you have any author friends that have helped you with your writing process or just been there for support?
A: I’ve gotten some advice from a few people on Instagram but I am kind of just winging it and learning as I go.
Q: What was the best money ever spent as a writer?
A: Choose to have my book professionally edited and the cover designed. It really helped bring my book to life and I am very glad I spent the money on it.
Q: How does your family feel about your writing?
A: They were a little shocked but glad I found something I like. I have always been an athlete and pursuing science related careers so it was a big change in pace.
Q: Is there anything about you that your readers don’t know that you would like them to know?
A: I am a husky mom to two beautiful girls, Freyja and Kora. I love going on adventures and exploring with them.

Author Interview with C. Standing
Alright y'all, this lovely pictured right here is one of my favorite UK Indie authors! C Standing was part of the debut group I constantly promoted last year along with T. Steele and Waverly Alexander. Since she is still working on book two in the You series and is getting ready to release book two in her Nick and Holly story, I figured it was time to get her lovely face back into the spotlight a little. I will admit that I don't get to talk to her as much as I would like, but I know she has been hard at work! So let's check out the brain that brought us all the angsty, friends to lovers story of Back to You.
Q: What is your name and where do you live?
A: Hi! I’m C. Standing and I’m from the UK!
Q:Are you an Indie Author or do you work with a publishing company?
A: Indie, baby!
Q: What genre(s) do you write?
A: Erotica. Contemporary. (I would say a little bit of angst, but that's just me lol.)

Q: How many books do you have in the works right now?
A: 2. And they’re both kicking my ass! (Although one of those is pretty close to being released soon!!)
Q: What was your hardest scene to write so far?
A: I hate anything angst. I’m always in awe of how Waverly writes angst so wonderfully yet mine feels like pulling teeth! I also had to do a triggery scene in Back to You involving Rome and Tiffany that didn’t sit well with me. 😠(I personally don't know what she means by writing angst. She does amazing! I do know that the triggery scene was a little hard to read personally, but it really helped the story.)

A: I don’t have the brain span or willpower to have a series that interconnects the same plot, so all of mine will be standalone. But they’ll feature couples from previous books in the series. Each couple will have their own storyline.

A: I do pretty much what I’m doing now: go insane! Knowing I have half of one book and the foundations of another just sitting in my docs, is driving me crazy. I hate wanting to write but not knowing where to start.

Q: What routine do you have when you sit down to write a book?
A: I don’t really have a routine. Being a SAHM, I write when I can. That’s usually at night or first thing in the morning. Demon doesn’t even nap now, so I don’t even have that reprise to work on getting some words down. But when I do write, I need a film or something on in the background. Just for the noise. My go-to is Harry Potter. #Gryffindor

A: Short ones, but I wouldn’t really call them sprints. I don’t time myself, I just write what I can until I start to feel my attention waning.

Get A Life, Chloe Brown
Alright y'all, this beauty was one of my BOTM purchases this year. Yes, I know I am late to the game, because it's been out a while, but that's okay. This was one of those purchases that was made later, because I was buying up more thrillers than anything when this book hit the November BOTM options. Talia Hibbert had me laughing, crying, and going what the hell in this cute rom-com. It is told through two POVs, but there isn't really a clear switch between the two since it is told in the third person. It all flows really well, so it isn't something that you notice too much. It was honestly one of the perfect books to help get me really going into my summer reading. Let's dive in shall we?
Two months after a near death experience, Chloe Brown decides to make a Get A Life list, despite the fact that she battles chronic pain and fibromyalgia. First step is to move out of her family home. She finds a cuteish flat, and starts a web design business so she can work from home. Her two younger sisters, Dani and Eve, hope that she'll actually have some fun besides whatever is on her list. During one of her early nights in, Eve calls Chloe and tries to convince her to go to a karaoke bar. Chloe says no, because she can just feel the bone deep exhaustion trying to course through her body. Chloe tries to focus on her work after getting off the phone with Eve, but ends up looking at her list again. One of the items on her Get A Life list is to do something bad. However, she has technically already done that when she "accidentally" spied on her superintendent Redford "Red" Morgan as he pains half naked in the flat across the courtyard.
Chloe decides to take one of her irregular walks a couple days later, and ends up climbing a tree to save a cat. Just as she gets up the tree to the cat, Red appears on the ground below her. He ends up having to climb up to help her down, because she can feel her body trying to quit cooperating. Chloe tries to understand why her body is responding like a cat in heat to Red, but her brain and mouth are her usual rude. Once they are all out of the tree, Chloe sort of asked for permission to keep the cat before just taking it with her anyway. Red was going to just brush it off, but decides to check on her instead because she was grey, sweaty, and clearly in pain. When he arrives at her flat, she lets him in and he is surprised by the mess. However, they share a cup of tea while she tells him that she's in constant pain. Red brings up the fact that he needs a website after seeing her business cards laying out, and wants to know what she charges. She tells him that she will give him a free consult for a ride on his motorcycle, since it's on her list. Then she shoos him out of the apartment so she can rest.
Three days later, Dani and Eve come over for a visit. After telling how she climbed up the tree to save Smudge the cat, minus Red's part, Chloe listens as her sisters swoon over Red. When they push Chloe about her sex life, Chloe thinks about how her social life disappeared when her fiancee and friends got tired of the constant rain checks and careful coping mechanisms. Chloe decides to take a shower to wash off the three day sweat and change her clothes. When she rejoins Dani and Eve in the living room, it is clear that they cleaned up a bit. She decides to shoo them out with the promise of getting together soon. Chloe works on a couple of her other lists, and simply adds "Red" to her weekly planner. Chloe does some research on Red to get a better idea of what kind of site he needs, and finds a few of his old paintings.
Chloe showed up at Red's flat to do the consult for his website, and has no clue that Red has had a few sexy dreams about her. After getting settled near his bed since the living room has been converted into an art studio, Chloe studies one of his new paintings. Red watches her closely, and sees the love she has for the painting until Chloe turns her professional face back on. Chloe begins to explain that she did Google him beforehand, and Red half jokingly admits that he saw her peeping at him the other night. Eventually their conversation turns toward Smudge and how she still hadn't taken him to the vet to check for a chip. After a few laughs and calling each other rude, Red offers to take Chloe on his motorcycle and postpone the consult since it is clear that neither of them can focus.
Chloe almost chickens out while they are standing in the empty carport, but decides that her Get A Life list meant that she needed to get on the motorcycle. She also needed to allow the few personality changes required to cross this item off to happen, because that was the whole point of the list. To slowly change her personality little by little until she could finally have a normal life again within her physical limits. After Red helps her with the helmet and get settled on the seat properly, Chloe realizes that she finds Red attractive. She wonders if he will help out with the rest of the list, but it has to be done in a transactional relationship so no one gets hurt. Chloe knows that one day he will walk away from her, and this way there was no feelings involved that could get hurt. She couldn't go through that again. When they get back, Chloe hugs Red in thanks before recomposing herself. While walking to the courtyard, she asks him to help her with some of her list but doesn't want to go into detail out in the open. Despite his brain telling him not to, Red says yes mainly because he wants to get to know her. Even after she says she'll build him a website for free if he does help when he knows he can afford to pay for it.
Red goes over to Vik's house, the owner of the flat complex and Red's long time friend, to see if he can paint anything like he used to. However when Red gets into the zone as Vik stands close by in the attic, the painting turns into something out of a vivid nightmare. While disappointed, his mood is instantly lifted when he sees an email from Chloe on his phone. They end up emailing back and forth all day about her list, the website, and a few personal tidbits on both sides. The last email Chloe sends is telling Red to come over the next day after work to talk about the list. Chloe intended to work and research before Red was supposed to come over, but she ended up falling asleep instead. She is startled awake by Red knocking on her door, and completely forgets that she is wearing a lemur oneise.
Once they are both settled on her comfy couch, Chloe hands him a modified list that doesn't include the "meaningless sex" item. They talk some more, and Chloe watches as he basically plans out the "camping trip" and a "wild night out" items for the next two weekends. Red asks her to give him some idea of what her physical and health limitations are without getting too detailed about it. Chloe gives him a quick summary of her fibromylagia and chronic pain that sometimes leaves her weak for days. She reassures him that she knows her physical limitations and doesn't think either activity will push them. Red asks her what made her think of her life as before and after, and reveals that he sees his own life that way. Chloe tells him about how her fiancee walked away from her during the years that she was trying to find a diagnosis and how it all started.
Chloe had caught pneumonia that almost killed her, although she just remembers the constant pain she was in. Once she got better, the pain never went away. Doctors pushed her away saying that it was all in her head. Her fiancee thought she was just being needy and wanting special attention. Friends started to disappear when she kept cancelling plans that weren't inside her careful coping mechanisms or that would push her too much physically. Her family was the only one that kept fighting with her to figure out what was going on. Years later she was finally diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and connected with all the specialist she needs as well as a medication regime that works.
When she finished the story, Red made some comments about how her friends and fiancee were pathetic and selfish that made her laugh so hard he could see the joy on her face. Eventually the laughs faded and things got heated enough that Red placed his forehead against hers and held her hands as he kissed her jaw and throat as she moans a little. Red eventually stops long enough to tell her that he will stop if she wants. Chloe tells him to stop, because she doesn't want to try to have meaningless sex with Red no matter how her body responded. She admits to herself that there will never be anything meaningless with him, especially not after he admits that he likes her. Even though her body is telling her to jump his bones, Chloe knows that she isn't ready to involve feelings into any relationship right now. First she needs to build her life back up. Chloe literally pushes Red out the door after reassuring him that she still wants him to help her with part of the list.
After two days of flushed and forbidden daydreams, and a very PROFESSIONAL meeting with Red about his website, Chloe is supposed to be getting ready for her "wild night out" with Red. Since it's Saturday, Chloe tried to get some work done beforehand, but instead ends up researching all the places that Red wrote down in the notebook. They were all within comfortable walking distant for her sake. When she is supposed to be getting ready, Chloe stares at Smudge when Gigi cals her. Turns out that Smudge does have a chip that is up to date, and when she contacted the owner about returning him, she finds out that the owner is out of town on vacation. Chloe tells Gigi all about it and is still on the phone when Red knocks on the door. Chloe hurried her Gigi off the phone as politely as possible when she realizes that she is still in her robe. Chloe lets Red in before getting dressed.
They head to the first nightclub that seemed really sketchy, but Red assures her that you always want to start with the cheap priced drinks first. Red holds her hand the whole time, and while Chloe knows it is so they don't get separated, she enjoys it. When they get inside, they head straight to the bar and have a few shots together. Red starts to take her to the dance floor, but Chloe always hated that part of the night when she went out with her friends during her university years before she got sick. Red catches her head shake, and leads her to a booth in the quiet corner. She tells him that she wants to leave, and he happily leads her out onto the street. He continues to hold her hand while she wears his jacket because it is a lot colder for her thanks to her nerve endings. Chloe decides to abandon the pub crawl plan, so Red takes her somewhere special to him. He leads her to an art gallery that hangs some of its paintings in the alley way leading to the door. He watches her face as she takes them all in happily before leading her inside. They take the spiral staircase and walk through the rest of the gallery.
While walking the gallery, Red tells her about his grandfather who scrapped together enough money to let Red go on a field trip to the National Gallery when he was nine. That trip changed his view on jobs, and helped him discover his love for painting. He appreciated his grandfather that much more after that trip, and wears his rings daily. While Chloe listened, her body filled up with lust and the alcohol in her system made it almost impossible to control her thoughts. Chloe asks him what is one thing that he wants to do that would affect as deeply as the field trip. He replies that he wants to visit Museum of Modern Art in New York one day. Chloe admits that New York is also in her list, and he admits he had been to New York already. He went with his ex and it wasn't on her site seeing list. Before she could ask anymore about it, they were interrupted by a man lingering nearby throwing pointed looks until Red gives an expression back.
Chloe knows it's because everyone in the gallery sees them as an interracial couple, and explains that she has learned to filter the little hates out over the years. It is just something she has had to deal with as a black woman in society. Red tells her that she doesn't need to explain anything to him. He does however apologize for putting all his baggage about class difference on her. While Chloe is a little confused about the apology, she accepts it because of the look of remorse in his eyes. They are both snickering like children when a man named Julian walks up to Red. Turns out that the man who was giving them stares complained to Julian, the gallery owner, but Julian dismisses the man when he realizes it's Red. They share a hug and catch up a little before Red introduces Chloe to Julian. It is clear to her that Red is acting, but can't figure out why. Red then rushes them out of the gallery after getting Julian's card.
Red takes her outside, and tells her about how Julian's father helped when he was first figuring out the whole painting world. They walk towards the Day Cross, a random stone monument that no one knew what is for, so they could rest before walking back. When Red suggests they sit on the steps, Chloe immediately asks if he is really okay with that. Red decides that what she needs is a friend to undo all the damage her awful old friends did. They sit together, and Chloe starts to ask about his past. Before Red can finally tell her everything, she confesses to peeping at him through her window, and that her list she showed him is censored. When he asks why she did it, she tells him it's because he seems so vital when he paints and it's addicting to watch. Instead of being mad at her, he admits that he already knew about it. Her reason however makes his heart skip a little, and decides to stop holding back. It takes her face in his hands, and asks if he can make her moan again. She simply replies with "Please".
Will Chloe continue to deny her feelings for Red? Will either of them see how they could be good for each other? Will Chloe actually complete her Get A Life list without Red?
This rom-com by Talia Hibbert was absolutely amazing! I laughed, teared up, and shook my head a lot! I can see now that this book series is going to become one of my favorites! While I know I probably didn't stop in my normal cliff hanger type spot, but this was felt like the perfect stopping point. We all know that rom-coms usually end well, but we all read them for to watch the relationship blossom. I loved this book mainly because it dealt with an illness that not everyone talks about or can see. I am all for books that sort of normalize things like that, and this one did not fail in that department. I cannot wait to see what the other two Brown sisters' stories hold! If you simply must add this one to your TBR before book two comes out, be sure to head over to my page:

Author Interview with Yaffa S. Santos
Alright, so I met this lovely when Harper Perennial sent me an ARC of her book, A Taste of Sage. I was super shocked when she actually responded to my post, and we had a short conversation. So I figured I would ask her to be part of my author interview posts, and thankfully she said yes! While she is working with a publisher, I know that she worked har on her book, and continues to work hard to make sure people know it is out in the world. So let's get inside her brain shall we?
Q: What is your name and where do you live?
A: My name is Yaffa S. Santos and I live in Florida.
Q: Are you an Indie Author or do you work with a publishing company?
A: I work with a publishing company.
Q: If you do work with a publishing company, which one and for how long?
A: HarperCollins, and this is my first book with them.
Q: What genre(s) do you write?
A: I write romance, rom-coms and women’s fiction.
Q:What made you want to become a writer in the first place?
A: I loved writing since I was a child. When I was 5 or 6 years old, I would write and illustrate little picture books.
Q: Do you work a regular job in between books?
A: Yes. I work in education.
Q: How many books have you published?
A: This is my first one.
Q: How many books do you have in the works right now?
A: I have started outlining a second one. (Is it wrong to say that I'm excited already?)
Q: What was your hardest scene to write so far?
A: Hmm. I’m not sure how to say it without spoilers. The scene where Lumi and Julien misunderstand each other and have an argument. That’s all I will say for now! (I loved that scene! It really is amazing, because the conversation feels like one you could have every day!)
Q: How many books do you have that are not being currently worked on, but are half-written or complete but unpublished?
A: I have one previous novel that I have decided to shelve indefinitely. Working on it helped me work on A TASTE OF SAGE, though. I learned a lot.
Q: Do you have a series developing?
A: Not at this time! I don’t discount it as a possibility for the future, though.
Q: Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
A: Yes, more like a body of work with connections between the books.
Q: What is your next book that is set to be published and when is the release day?
A: My book, A TASTE OF SAGE, has just been published and it was released on May 19th!
Q: How long did it take you to write it?
A: About four years.
Q: What did you do when your characters stop talking (writer’s block) to you during the process?
A: I would take a break, focus on something else for a while, and read.
Q: What routine do you have when you sit down to write a book?
A: I get up early. For A TASTE OF SAGE, I got up at 5 A.M. every week day. That helped me to carve out a block of time before the busy-ness of the day began.
Q: Do you write it all out in long sittings or short ones (sprints)?
A: I did a little of both, but mostly sprints because I was writing in between working and mommying. (Totally understand!)
Q: Do you get exhausted or energized during writing sessions?
A: A little of both.
Q: Where do you get your ideas for your books?
A: I read a lot, whether it’s novels, newspapers, magazines. And some come from the people around me as well as places I have spent time. My main character, Lumi, lives in Upper Manhattan, in a neighborhood I lived in my 20s.
Q: Is there another author you look up to or strive to be as successful as?
A: I love anything by Priscilla Oliveras, Mia Sosa, and Adriana Herrera.
Q: Are you a reader yourself?
A: Yes.
Q: If so, are you a beta or ARC reader for anyone else? (You don’t have to name for who if you do not wish to.)
A: Yes, I belong to a writers’ group, we all read each other’s work and beta for each other.
Q: Do you like to read the same genre(s) you write?
A: Yes!
Q: Do you have a favorite book or a book that stands out the most?
A: Wow. It’s hard to pick just one. My most recent favorite is The Beast of Beswick by Amalie Howard. (I have this one still staring at me on my shelves. I guess I need to add it to the Summer TBR lol.)
Q: Have you ever cried, laughed, or had a real emotional response to a book?
A: Yes! In the genre I read and write, I usually laugh, and I have often cried.
Q: What kind of social media do you have?
A: I am on Instagram as at yaffasantos.author, and on Twitter as at yseraphsantos.
Q: Do you like to connect with your readers using your chosen platforms?
A: Yes! I do. (She really does like to hear from us y'all!)
Q: Do you have any author friends that have helped you with your writing process or just been there for support?
A: Yes. I had two great critique partners, and the writing group I mentioned.
Q: What was the best money ever spent as a writer?
A: Getting a laptop!?
Q: How does your family feel about your writing?
A: If they don’t like it, they haven’t told me to my face. Just kidding, they are supportive.
Q: Is there anything about you that your readers don’t know that you would like them to know?
A: That it’s been a long road for me to get to where I am, and I am happy and grateful to have the opportunity.

Westcott High 2
Alright y'all, you already know that I'm obsessed with this book series and this Indie author. We first connected when she reached out to me about Westcott High, but we got to talking about how she was in the same state as me. She sent me the first chapter and I was hooked. I was honored when she sent me a signed copy to review, and I became hooked! So of course when she told me about WH2, I jumped on the chance to continue the story! So here we are! Now it is available already, but I'm still going to treat it as an ARC. YOU MUST READ WESTCOTT HIGH BEFORE READING THIS BOOK OR THIS REVIEW!! It picks up right where book one left off. If you have read it, then let's dive in shall we?

The Violets are the kids that have the rich parents who pay for tuition fully. The Cobalts are the lucky lottery winners that are going to WHS on scholarship. Some students use this difference to make sure that they stay on top since it is 80/20 in favor of the Violets. However, as you continue to read you will find that the color game is not important to some. Especially when the Royal Blues get added into the mix.

Sonny is waiting for everyone at Laurel's Bakery with coffee so they can talk about what they are going to do now. Cliff was the first one to show up, and he still continued to ooze privilege just like Violets are supposed to. Sonny thinks about the ten lessons her friends have taught her. Cliff taught her about money when he told her how to really maximize her tutor profits. Norah came next with her usual fashion and strut, but she did teach Sonny how to be tough when she walked in on Norah in the middle of an extreme painting session. Sonny suggested starting over, but Norah reminded her that you don't get to start over in life, you just try to make shitty things better. Next to join them at Laurel's is Winston who was a little paler than normal, but still looked like himself. Winston taught her humor even when her world wasn't funny. This started when she tried to "rescue" him from bullies, but he turned out to rescue Sonny more than she ever did him.
Ari was next to join the table, and she was still avoiding everyone but Norah. Ari taught Sonny what confidence looked like when Ari was one of the first few Cobalts to show up at Westcott and didn't run every time a Violet came her way. Buckets walked in with his usual camera hanging around his neck, and Sonny thinks about how he taught her about pictures, and not just the ones he took on his camera. Piper came next trying to not look anyone in the eye. Piper taught Sonny about work ethic, because no one worked hard than her or made sure that she didn't fall below her own standards. JC jerked the door open and plopped down into his chair. JC taught her patience the first time he listened to her cry about Dean and talked to her for two hours instead of bolting to his car after practice with her dad. Dean came in and sat down next to Sonny as she thought about he taught her about what love was and wasn't. Especially that love wasn't their breakup, but love was sitting in his car outside her house until she turned off her light to sleep. Kyle came in shortly after Dean, and sat at the other end of the table. Kyle taught Sonny about goodness with his sweet soul that never had a catch when he did something. She has had conversations with Kyle that he would never admit to, but he was still her best friend since they were kids.
It had been three weeks since the conversation with Principal Winchester in parking lot C, and they have all hardly spoken a word to each other. However, Sonny knew she had to tell them about the note she held in her hand. It was inside the box that Jacob had Norah give her when he left. The address led Sonny to a printing shop where a stack of photos was printed under her name. The photos were of Piper and Principal Winchester exchange the manila envelope that they all knew contained the Princeton profile Piper needed to stand out with their admissions department. Buckets reminds them all that Winchester has them on video breaking the SCC (Student Code of Conduct) and was still threatening to use it. Since every Cobalt in their group can't take the chance of getting kicked out and JC transferred to Jefferson High to continue wrestling and get away from having to see Piper daily, Buckets asked what was the point in trying to figure out anything else?
Sonny reminds him that the Bella View kids were about to flood their school, which means more trouble for them. If they can get rid of Principal Winchester, then they can stop any more blackmail or heartache from happening to them. Surprisingly Norah is the first to agree with her, but everyone else points out how they can't really trust each other fully. Buckets finally admits that Lana was the one to leak the video of her when Sonny and Winston start to attack Cliff about it again. Piper tells the group that she will not get involved in anything else that involves Principal Winchester, because she honestly believes that he will stay silent if they do. Piper tells Sonny to focus on Casey since she is the only one who didn't show up today. When Sonny brings up Casey's brothers, Piper pulls out her phone and shows a photo. Sonny realizes that Casey taught her the lesson that no one really knows anyone, because the photo showed that no one really knows Casey at all.
Sonny goes with JC to the Jefferson High homecoming dance, which she happily agreed to after Lana came home for a quick visit that was awkward after learning about the video. Sonny tries to look at Jefferson High the way JC does, a chance to be normal. They talk about Piper walking out on them earlier, but JC reminds her that Piper is driven by success above all else. Sonny may not have liked it, but when JC tells her that all he can do is focus on what he can do moving forward she has to admit that he is right. No matter how unfair it all seemed. The next topic is her relationship with Dean, which despite what everyone believed was strictly a friendship. JC tells her that he is just concerned, but Sonny avoids talking much more about it when JC mentions Jacob. They try to just enjoy the dance before she has to start focusing on the Westcott Awards paper she was writing.
A couple hours and multiple drive thrus later, JC and Sonny pulled into her driveway. JC asks about her dad, but Sonny is still trying to figure out why he sticks up for her dad. Her dad got arrested for being corrupt and kicked JC off the team for allegedly stealing an answer sheet. When they get to her doorstep, there's a note telling her to meet someone in parking lot C at midnight. No name, and no identifying marks. JC thinks it's from Jacob, but Sonny just wants to ignore it. JC convinces to go, because if it is from Jacob then she can demand some answers while he waits in the car. Before they can get into the parking lot, Cliff cuts them off asking what they are doing. Sonny texted Winston about the note, and apparently he texted Casey who texted Buckets who texted everyone else who showed up shortly minus Piper. Cliff reminds them about the cameras covering every inch of parking lot C, and how everything they do can be looked as shady through the wrong pair of eyes.
The conversation quickly turns into Cliff asking Casey what the hell has been going on with her lately. When she tries to dodge it, he tells her that Pip showed them the picture of her having dinner with Bella View student Sawyer. Sawyer Ellington is a Royal Blue from Bella View, a Chosen Ten, and Cliff's direct competition. Casey finally admits that they have been hanging out because Sawyer was assigned to her brothers in the Westcott Big Brother program. Kyle tries to warn her that Sawyer could be up to something, because he wouldn't just date someone like Casey which of course makes her angrier with him. Casey finally unloads on him that she knows everyone at the school thinks she just trash even though she is a mother to her brothers at 16, has a mom who loves vodka more than her kids, and that she never knows if her car will run out of gas the next day. Casey gets in her car and drives away while they rest of them try to process what just happened.
Sonny tries to convince everyone to just go home, but Dean convinces them all to just park on the side road just outside of school grounds. They walk up the grass hill, and through the trees. Sonny and Winston whisper about everything Casey said, and decide not to get involved. Worse case scenario is he pours pig blood all over her at the Christmas Gala. They all stop just at the edge of the trees. They had the perfect view of parking lot C and the left wing being added on to the school from here without being seen on camera. They all put their phones on silent and then wait. They don't have to wait long though to see why someone wanted Sonny there. First Cliff smells smoke, and then they all watch as the left wing went up in a blaze. They all run back to their cars with the realization that their lives would never be the same.
The following Monday, Westcott is flooded with reporters and all Sonny can do is think about the note left on her doorstep. Kyle says that his dad and the police don't have any suspects at the moment, but he knew his dad wouldn't stop until he did. Winston joins them at the lockers with the admission that he talked to a reporter before asking if anyone had heard from Casey. When Kyle and Sonny admit that they hadn't, Winston asks what is the big deal with Bella View. Sonny explains that it started decades ago when the Crescent schools were first started, it immediately became about who was better with a trifecta of power-hungry administrators and parents. The problem with Sawyer however is completely personal since Cliff outplayed Sawyer during football camp in front of Ivy League coaches.
Sonny walks up to Cliff at his locker to find that he didn't sleep well and has a sling on his arm. When Sonny tries to ask him what happened and if it happened while they were in the woods, Cliff flips out and says that they were never in any woods. Cliff says they all need to just keep their mouths shut since the cops were swarming the place to do an investigation. If anyone, especially Principal Winchester, suspects them they are all screwed whether they actually did anything or not. Before they can talk anymore, the doors burst open as the Royal Blues make their entrance. London Vanderbilt, Stella King, Alice Kennedy, Sawyer, Quinn Meyers, and Max Crimson were the only ones who were allowed in this year since the left wing burned down.
Suddenly Assistant Principal Clemmons came over the intercom announcing a surprise mandatory rally. Which has most of the students confused since they usually happen on Fridays. Sonny and Winston follow the crowd to the auditorium while talking about how Cliff said everyone needed keep quiet. Once they find their seats, Casey asks Sonny if they can talk for a second before the rally starts. Casey tells her that Sawyer's dad has been helping her and her brothers get into private foster care because her aunt can't afford to take care of them anymore since her mom hasn't sent any money to help out. Since she has proof her mom is unfit, there's even a chance that her brothers can get adopted once Casey graduates. Sonny asks why she didn't say anything to them before, and Casey simply puts it as it not being like a broken phone screen. Casey sits in a different row from Sonny and Winston when Principal Winchester announces the start of the rally.
The rally is basically a way to announce three different things. First is an announcement about the left wing and a welcome to the Royal Blues. Next announcement is that Jacob and his dad will be joining the Westcott High students and facility. Mr. Harrison will be investigating the fire while also being the new student advisor while Jacob rejoins Dean's team. The decision came when it was discovered that the culprit deactivated the cameras long enough to start the fire without being seen on campus. After the rally ended, Sonny followed Dean as he confronted Coach T about Jacob just being allowed back on the basketball team. Sonny speaks up just in time to stop Dean from losing his spot on the roster and reminds him that he needs to stay focused no matter how he feels about Jacob. Dean makes Sonny promise not to speak to Jacob again after what he did, but Sonny knows she will have to get answers eventually.
One by one students started getting pulled in for interviews and parents came and went each time. Sonny and the rest of the group tried to just act normal and focus on things like the Christmas Gala and the Westcott Awards, but that was hard with the constant threat of an arsonist over everyone's heads. Casey finally joins them for lunch a couple days later, and explains to Winston that foster care was the only option she had left for her and her brothers, so Sonny and Winston decide to fake happy for her. Out of nowhere, Norah sits down at their table just to complain about the Royal Blues. Sonny reminds her that they were only allowed into the school because they are six of the Chosen Ten. Sonny tunes out Casey, Norah, and Winston bickering when she spots Jacob across the lunch room until they call her attention to the fact that Ari hasn't been heard from since the night of the fire. However, all conversations stops when Sawyer sits down next to Casey.
Cliff comes up to the table and asks Sonny to follow him, because he needs to talk to her about something important. Sonny follows Cliff to where an out of breath Ari is waiting. The three of them go into a vacant classroom before Ari tells her that she can't find her phone and that she thinks she dropped it when they were running out of the woods. Turns out that both Cliff and Ari have been looking for it all morning with no luck. Sonny tries to help Ari retrace her steps that night, but Ari is so exhausted that she can't remember. It isn't until Mr. Harrison pulls Sonny in for questioning that Ari's phone is found, because it is staring at Sonny on his shelf. Sonny tries to act like everything is okay as Mr. Harrison tries to make amends with her, but all Sonny can focus on is keeping her story straight especially when she spies Ari's phone on the way out the door.
A few nights later, Sonny heads to the country club to meet everyone after pretending everything was fine when her mom asked how school was going. First thing discussed once everyone was seated at the table was the fact that Mr. Harrison gave Ari back her phone. She told him that she must have dropped it while vaping on the side street, and he must have believed her. Especially since her phone was dead when he found it, but the question still remained of how he found it in the first place. Winston says they should just be glad that it was found on the side street instead of the woods or Principal Winchester finding it. The conversation turns into a fight about how they could all be suspected since they are associated with Ari. Sonny tells them about her talk with Mr. Harrison, but she said she didn't know anything about the fire. Then it becomes a small pissing contest between Cliff and Kyle over Ari despite Cliff still saying there's nothing going on between him and Ari anymore. Sonny stops the argument before it can go much further, and just in time for Buckets to walk in.
Buckets drops the bomb that Principal Winchester has him looking into the security camera hack. The only thing that Buckets was able to find out is that whoever set the fire took the time to turn the cameras back on a few minutes after the fire started. Which means that whoever did this is the person who sent Sonny the note in an attempt to frame her. After everyone leaves the country club, Sonny drives to Jacob's almost on auto pilot because she has to know if he was responsible. Jacob shows her a receipt for a bowling alley in Long Beach the day of the fire, which means that him and his dad didn't get back into town until Sunday. Sonny starts to walk away, but Jacob starts explaining that he fake dated Norah in an attempt to keep her at arm's length when her dad got arrested in hopes they could still be friends.
Sonny asks him about the kiss they shared and about the lie that his parents just moved there. He admits that the plan was stupid, but didn't regret the kiss. His parents are divorced, so the house is his mom's. Him and his dad are staying there since she travels a lot for work. He joined the team to blend in, because he didn't know how long they would be there. He apologizes to Sonny for not telling her everything, and then admits to leaving the note about the photos of Piper. Sonny decides to tell him everything they found out after he left including the fire even though she still isn't sure that she can trust him fully. She is sure however that she can help them figure out who is behind the fire.
The next morning, Sonny tells Kyle that they can cross off Jacob from their list, because of the talk they had the night before. The plan was to have Dean talk to Jacob today, but Sonny admits that she couldn't wait. She even admits to Kyle that she told Jacob everything, because she thinks that he can help. Out of the corner of her eye, Sonny sees Mr. Harrison walk up to Cliff at his car, so they wait for him while Casey walks by with Sawyer. Sonny repeats to Cliff that Jacob wasn't behind the note, but doesn't get to tell him how she knows when Dean walks up. Cliff decides to tell Dean that he talked to Jacob already when Sonny starts to tell him that Jacob didn't write the note.
During their class with Mrs. Penn, Sonny and Kyle debate the death scene in Romeo and Juliet. First discussion is about how it was not about two kids committing suicide because they were madly in love. Kyle is in Juliet's corner while Sonny is in Romeo's, but Sonny can see that Kyle is actually talking about Casey when he speaks about the story really being about two kids who never got the chance to find out if they were really meant to be or just teenagers swept up in the moment. The class takes a break when Casey asks to use the bathroom. Sonny sees the look on her face that shows Casey got the hidden message.
It's Thanksgiving which means that Sonny and her mom are headed over to Kyle's house per their new tradition. Kyle and Sonny try to act like this was any other year, but the discussion of her visit to Jacob's came up when she is texting Dean. Kyle reminds her that she's his best friend and that he won't let anything happen to her. They are about to sit down to dinner when Sonny announces that she also invited Norah and JC since Kyle's mom said it was okay. Kyle is giving Sonny a death glare while the adults try to get some kind of conversation going around the table. Kyle and Sonny go into the kitchen to get the pies, and Sonny tells him that she invited them because they need to talk about something after dinner. A couple hours later, the four of them are walking out to the driveway when Sonny tells him that they need to go to Piper's house. Norah explains that they need to search her room at her mom's while she's at her dad's to find that Princeton profile.
The car ride is quiet since Norah has headphones in and JC is asleep. Kyle and Sonny talk about him and Ari, but he still insists that there is nothing going on between them because she broke up with him. He turns the conversation to Casey, because he is still concerned about her despite the fact that Casey has been ignoring him left and right. Sonny tells him about Sawyer's dad helping her find placement in the private foster care system since things are working out with her aunt anymore and her mom won't get sober. They pull up near Piper's house, and Norah gets out with Sonny. However the boys join them when they all hear yelling and banging going on inside. Before they make it to the door, Piper comes out with a bag at her side. They try to talk to her about the fire, but Piper ends up going back inside after telling them that she was in the hospital that night for a panic attack. She tells them to leave before her grandparents showed up. They leave without any idea on who to talk to or what to do next.
The Monday after Thanksgiving break was anything but ordinary. First Kyle was questioned by Mr. Harrison about how well he knows Ari, Cliff, and Sonny. Kyle tried to down play all of their friendships, but still thinks Mr. Harrison is up to something. Before they can discuss it further, Sawyer bumps into Kyle who then bumps into Sonny. That quickly turns into a fist fight between the Royal Blues and Kyle, Sonny, Norah, Dean, and Ari. It doesn't take too long before Mr. Harrison and Principal Winchester are breaking it up. They all end up with being sent home for the rest of the week instead of being suspended for breaking the biggest rule of the SCC.
Dean shows up at Sonny's house later that night to just check on her, but it turns into a few kisses. That is until Buckets makes his presence known in the window behind them. He comes in to tell them he figured out nine different places someone could have parked and walked to the school to burn down the left wing. However the most logic place was in front of Laurel's, so he pulls up the camera feed and they see Guy Penn, the English teacher's son, walking to his car around the time of the fire. While suspicious, the three of them know this isn't enough proof to sway anyone, especially Principal Winchester.
Will they ever figure out who is trying to frame Sonny? What other secrets are they each keeping from each other? Will any of them be able to actually enjoy the Christmas Gala? Will Sonny ever figure out how she feels about Jacob or Dean? Will Kyle get another chance with Casey or is she all about Sawyer now?
I know that is probably not the best spot to stop, but that is actually the perfect place to stop. I know this is one of my lengthier reviews, but there is still a lot of detail that I didn't include. This 300+ page YA thriller will have you sucked in and ready for more, and I still get Pretty Little Liars vibes from it! Sarah Mello is absolutely a master at pulling you into the world of Westcott High and getting you to play the who done it game! I loved the ending cliff hanger and all, and can't wait to see what Sarah puts out into the world next. Even if it's not another Westcott High! If you need to add this one, and possibly Westcott High, to your TBR, be sure to head over to my page:

Author Interview with J Lynn Hicks
Alright y'all, this is another amazing author that I met through the FB Group Dystopian Ink. I haven't read her books yet, but I did...
